What would Dave do?

Alright, I may have never shared this on here before, but we really L.O.V.E. Dave Ramsey. He has inspired us to get out of debt and create a better lifestyle for our family. His book, "The Total Money Makeover" is a favorite of ours. Except for when we read it through ourselves, we've had it loaned out to different family and friends for almost 2 years, it's seriously that good! We love listening to his show, too. And we can't wait until we call in to say, "We're debt free!" :)

My favorite line he uses is, "Live like no one else so you can live like no one else." I can get by with very little short term so I can truly have what I want long term.

People think we're a little weird sometimes. That debt is just a part of normal life. It really is, but isn't that sad?

When we were first married Jared's S10 broke down so we decided to buy the truck we have now. We didn't really think about it too much, that's just what grown-ups do, right? And being a little naive, we kept hearing what we would be paying a month, not what the true cost would be. We really do love the truck, but if we could go back we wouldn't have bought it. Since the truck we have done pretty well at buying only for our NEEDS and only when we can truly afford it(aka pay cash for it).

Yesterday we did some car shopping, thinking we could downsize the truck now that we have some equity in it and come out of the deal with no more car payment. We tried explaining this to the car salesman. But he kept saying he could get us in such and such car that cost a little more but he could get the payment to half the size. No, we want NO payment. Has no one EVER done that?!

Anyway, looks like we'll be keeping our trusty truck for a while...

Triathlon Training- Week 1

Ok, so I slacked off a lot this week. But I was diagnosed with chronic tonisillitis so we'll call that my excuse. Now that I've got that under control I'll be more dedicated.

Tonight we followed through on our promise to Emma to take her swimming. So while Jared was with the girls in the shallow end I went to do some laps.

I've always known I'm not an amazing swimmer. I lack good form, more than anything(I really just don't keep my face in the water). But when I started swimming last night I thought, "Wow, I'm not too bad." My first length was great! So I did 3 laps(6 lengths) and thought my arms were going to fall off. At the race I have to do 14 laps(28 lengths) so there is lots of room for improvement!

But I think I'm going to enjoy this!

Where did our baby go?

So happy, so sweet. All the time. Just love this little girl! Today, at 9 months exactly, she woke up and decided to crawl. That's all she has done today!

No, Mom!

Yesterday afternoon the girls and I met up with some friends at Hop 2 It. It is a fun place to go just filled with bounce houses and games. Emma discovered the baseball game and LOVED it. She was having a hard time swinging the bat so I told her to use both hands. I often had to remind her. Then she wanted me to take a turn, so I was sitting on the ground next to the T while she put the balls on the T for me to hit. I was just hitting them softly while holding the bat with my right hand.

She got frustrated, came over to me and said, "No, Mom, no. BOTH!!" Yeah, I guess I should use both hands, too.

Woke up feeling ambitious today

Part of pulling through the January blahs for me is setting goals, having something to look forward to. I have recently been going to the gym more and focusing on nutrition for our family more, and it has helped me a lot. I've actually lost almost six pounds this month!

But I decided to start training for a sprint triathlon. Since it is my first one I'm doing a pretty simple, easy one. It includes a 1/2 mile swim, 10 mile bike ride, and 3 mile swim. I'm really the most worried about swimming well enough to get a decent time. It's on April 22nd, if any of you are interested.... Time to start training!!

The Battle of the Pacifier

Last week Emma was not going to bed very easily. I tried adjusting her naps, making them shorter and starting them earlier in the day. But Wednesday night it was still a nightmare trying to get her to stay in bed and go to sleep.

We have been cutting holes in the nipple of her pacifier to slowly wean her from them. Finally Wednesday night at 9:30 I gathered up the pacifiers, handed them to Emma, walked her over to the kitchen garbage can and had her throw away the broken pacifiers. She sadly put them in and waved good-bye. Then the real work began.

The problem with Emma and her pacifier is at her age, it has become her friend, her security blanket, not just something to suck on. So we used Supernanny's approach, sitting in her room without looking at her, touching her or talking to her until she fell asleep. It worked ok, but we were in there for at least 45 minutes until she was totally asleep. And then she still came into our bed at 4:30 a.m.

Naptime was a little easier, but still difficult.

Last night, we put her into bed and she protested as we left the room, but never got out of bed and never cried. She stayed in her own bed all night. Yay!

A whole lot of nothing

Today we did nothing. We have been battling pacifier weaning and bad dreams and upset stomachs and haven't had much sleep this week, so we just laid around and watched movies and hung out.

We all got naps. We ate leftovers for lunch.

We did tell Emma if she stayed dry all morning we would all go swimming after her nap. She did and was SO excited to go. We all got in our swimsuits and loaded up to go. But when we got there a swim meet was taking place so we couldn't go. Emma was devastated.

So we came home and Emma and Madelyn went "swimming" in the bathtub with their swimming suits on. Then we had a picnic in the living room and played games(red light green light and duck duck goose).

If she keeps staying dry there might be some ice cream involved by the end of the day.

It was a perfect day, and it isn't even over yet. :)

We know it's January.

But this morning we decided to pretend it wasn't. After a fun class at the YMCA, I took the girls to the park across the street. Maddie has never really been on a swing like that and loved it! Emma kept asking me to give her "rrdogs"(underdogs).

Empty nesters?

After a difficult day Friday, Jared's mom called to check in and see how potty training was going. Apparently she could hear the frustration in my voice because she called back 5 minutes later and said she would meet us in Rupert and take the girls for the weekend. I feel so guilty having other people watch my kids, but she asked at a good time because I desperately needed a break. So we met up with them and handed over the kids(along with underwear and the potty chair.)

We came back to Twin and went to eat at Johnny Carino's at 9pm. When is the last time you and your husband have left the house together after bedtime? We NEVER do.

We were so excited to sleep in, but were both up well before 8. We decided to go the gym to a spinning class(ouch! I'm so sore now!) Afterwards, I cut Jared's hair, he took our oven apart to see if he could fix it. He ended up slicing his finger on a piece in it and we almost went to get stitches(I still think we should have). I made a spring cleaning list(I know, and it's only January!!) and we divided it up and got SO much done at our house. Now if I can just upkeep with my new cleaning schedule. :)

Stake Conference is this weekend, so Jared had meetings from 4-6. I was at home completely by myself. First time in 2 years that has happened! Then we got to go to the adult session together and got our grocery shopping done after.

Today, not only do I get to have Jared sit BY me in church, we get to listen to the speakers. :)

Anyway, it has been a GREAT weekend. Very productive, and nice to spend some time with Jared. I spent a lot of time cleaning and organizing the girls' room. It looks great! At the end of the day, though, my house feels so empty, and I feel as though I have no purpose without them. I miss their giggles and smiles, their hugs and kisses. I miss reading them stories and eating together as a family. I really just want to cuddle with them.

I guess what I realized is that as much as it feels sometimes like my kids need a lot from me, I need them more than they will ever need me. I can't wait to see them tonight!!

8.5 Months

-So close to crawling. She can go from sitting to her back to her stomach and back to sitting very quickly. She gets up on her hands and knees and rocks, and can scoot backwards until she scoots under the coffee table or couch and gets her leg stuck.
-She is enjoying the same food as us. Somedays she gets disappointed if I try to give her baby food and will refuse it.
-She is sleeping from 8pm-6am and then we give her a bottle and she goes back to sleep for another hour or two. That is, of course, on our best nights. She still sometimes randomly wakes up.
-Things she loves right now: attention from her sister, kisses, cuddles, jumping in her jumper, going outside, mashed potatoes, her singing dog toy, paper, baths, stories.

22.5 Months

In case it isn't obvious, she didn't enjoy our first sledding expedition. Maybe because she wouldn't leave her gloves on?
-Started potty training 2 weeks ago. Yesterday at Grandma's, she only had one accident and took herself potty without any prompting once. She is so smart!
-Is using understandable words more. She can parrot just about anything we say.
-Her newest phrase this week is, "No, Mom."
-Things she gets excited about: going to see the temple, "calling" people, helping me cook, Elmo, Belle, getting stickers for her potty chart, taking care of her baby(doll), listening to the "Potle"(Apostle) on computer(I've been watching the general conference addresses), her portable DVD player(she would sleep with the thing!), ramen noodles, fruit snacks, her "sista", Hop 2 It, and getting in bed with mom and dad first thing in the morning(I secretly love it, too).

I'm just sayin'

If you haven't tried Zumba yet, you should. A-MAZING. And fun!
PS- I'm very sore. It works.

Smarty-pants

Monday Emma was totally accident-free potty training. So my plan today was to slowly start extending how often I take her to the bathroom. This morning she woke totally uninterested in it. And she can hold it for over an hour. I guess that is good, right? We just skipped my carefully planned steps? Either way, I'm very proud of her! Today we even went and grabbed a pizza and she and Olivia stayed dry the whole time!

The River

Before Emma was born, I remember people telling me how much my life was going to change. "Nothing will be the same" they said. I didn't understand but decided that was part of having a baby and I could do it.

After I had her, things really didn't change that much. There was less sleep and a little less flexibility with my schedule. I had to plan ahead a little more when I went places, but she fit fairly seamlessly into our lives.

We could still hold her and do about anything. Go out to dinner, go to the movies, work out at home, watch our favorite TV shows, eat whatever we wanted for dinner. She didn't make a mess of our house, it was always very contained to where we were at the time.

As she got older and then we added Madelyn to the family, this began to change.

There is really nothing that remains untouched by a child in our housse. There is always something to clean, toys to pick up off the floor, endless laundry to do. Any household project takes 5X as long with children underfoot. It takes me weeks to catch up on my favorite shows. It is a lot less enjoyable to go as a family to a restaurant. Jared and I get a maximum of 2 hours in the day of just US time after they are in bed. When we do get a chance to talk, I have a hard time switching out of "mom mode" and not talking about potty training, sleep training, pacifier weaning and eating schedules.

Having children has officially CHANGED our lives.

But a friend once told me about the "river of parenthood". My parents once stood where I stand, on the bank of the river, entering into the river as often as we needed them. But at some point, they took a running jump and cannon balled in. They dealt with boulders, currents, little branches, big logs, cold water, etc. But they threw themselves into parenting 100%. And as their daughter, I'm so grateful they did. I would be a different person if they had only parented half-heartedly.

I feel like I am standing on the bank right now. Sometimes I get frustrated by the things I listed earlier, feeling like I'm a little inconvenienced by them sometimes. Like I "deserve" certain things and they interrupt that. But I love my girls, and I want to do what is best for them. So it is time. I need to dive in. I will still have "me" time and Jared and I have come to realize how important a weekly date night is, but I'm all in. I am mother. This is not only what I do, but who I am.

De-Funking

I know that it is January, and that it is "normal" to have cabin fever or find ourselves in a funk. But I don't like it. It feels like depression. For me, I think it is aggravated by birth control issues, potty training, and cold weather. After feeling sorry for myself for several days, I decided I needed to de-funk my life.

So I started thinking of things I could do. I thought I would share what has helped the most in case any of you find yourselves in a similar situation...

#1: Sunshine/Exercise! I know that it was cold on Friday. It never got over 34 degrees. But that isn't really that cold, we bundled up lots and went for a 3 mile walk/jog. AMAZING what that did for all of us, espcially me.

#2: Organization. It might seem like it would stress you out more, but having a plan and following it, feeling like my house/family is in order, makes me happy. I found a website, Household Management 101, that gave me a lot of great ideas. My favorite were the cleaning schedules. Just doing a couple of things everyday is much less overwhelming than looking at your house as a whole. And it is fun to try to get all my chores for the day done before lunchtime so I can enjoy playing with my kids the rest of the day and not feel guilty. I also love the household notebook idea. Brilliant! You all probably know this stuff but it was all new to me!

#3: Serve. I know we've all heard this many times, but when I start thinking about others more than myself, I feel better. It doesn't even have to be a big thing. On one of my hardest days I got a phone call from someone who just needed to talk, who needed me to say a few things that I didn't know I was going to say. And I got off the phone thinking of this person, feeling so much better, and grateful that they were willing to call me and give me the opportunity to serve.

Out of the House!!

In the trenches of potty training, I have been right on the verge of losing my sanity more than once this week. This morning we got a package in the mail from my mom. Potty training pants! So we took advantage of the little bit of extra freedom they gave us and went for a walk. I thought it would be exciting for them, and they seemed very happy. Don't they look really excited to you?

Resolving to be better

So many things I want to do- run a half marathon, monthly temple attendance, morning prayer, morning scripture study, make it through all 90 days of P90X with no more than 1 day off in a row(this will make my weight loss goal happen), read some more classics, do my visiting teaching EVERY month, potty train Emma, read to the girls every day, follow our budget, have a cleaner house, experiment with new recipes, earn a trip to Hawaii, the list could go on and on.

I've been thinking about this a lot, but rather than just DOING things(just checking these items off my list), I want to BE someone different by the end of the year.

be more fit.
be more organized in my home.
be a better mom.
be debt free.
be a woman of my word.

All of my checklist items help with my primary goals, but keeping the big picture in sight really helps to set my priorities. Sometimes I get lost in doing something GOOD and miss out on achieving something BETTER. So that is what I'm focusing on in 2011. BEing someone better than I was in 2010.

Our 2010

Today I have done a lot of thinking about this coming year. All my goals, my plans, dreams. But I couldn't help but look back on 2010 and remember all of the great things that happened. And I'm grateful to have this blog that helps me with that.(144 posts in 2010!!) Brief synopsis...

December: Set up our beautiful Christmas tree Jared chopped down for us, hit and killed a deer, sharing time all month, sitting under the tree and cuddling with the girls, our secret santa who brought us a new Christmas story for 12 days leading up to Christmas, and a fantastic Christmas. Spent New Year's eating good food and playing games with great friends.

Can't wait for a year of new memories!

Happy New Years!!

2010 was a great year for us! We were blessed in so many ways. I'm looking forward to what is in store for us in 2011. Goals? I have a whole bunch, of course! :) But I'll post them later, except our big one which is to be totally debt free by the end of the year.

Wishing you all the best this year!
